Soji Morimoto earns 80,000 euros annually as a professional companion in Japan

Soji Morimoto, a 41-year-old from Japan, has established a unique profession where he is paid to simply accompany people without performing specific tasks. Describing his work as ‘renting himself,’ Morimoto meets clients to exist in their presence, whether listening to their stories, accompanying them to unfamiliar locations, or participating in unusual requests such as watching someone play in a park or smiling at a stranger from a train window.

Morimoto charges between 10,000 and 30,000 yen (approximately 60 to 185 euros) for sessions lasting two to three hours. Over the past four years, he has completed roughly 4,000 sessions, earning approximately 80,000 euros last year. He manages most client interactions through the platform X, where he has hundreds of thousands of followers; about one-quarter of these are regular clients.

Formerly employed at a publishing house, Morimoto reportedly faced reprimands for inactivity during work hours. He decided to monetize his ability to remain idle. While he accepts various requests, he has declined offers involving manual labor, travel to Cambodia, or sexual services.
