Sokoto State to provide free delivery kits to reduce maternal mortality
The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to provide free delivery kits to women using public health facilities to reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates. This initiative was disclosed by Health Commissioner Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar during the presentation of the Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) assessment report.
In addition to the delivery kits, the state intends to install solar-powered lighting systems in maternity units and labour rooms, while also strengthening antenatal care services. Dr. Abubakar noted that the strategy aims to address three critical delays: the postponement of seeking medical care, the time taken to reach facilities, and delays in receiving adequate treatment upon arrival.
While Sokoto has seen improvements in immunization rates and a decline in mortality figures, officials identified inadequate financial safeguards and limited investment as ongoing challenges. Abba Shehu, Chairman of the Sokoto State Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), emphasized the need to expand these programs across all 23 local government areas, particularly in rural communities where healthcare challenges are most acute.
