Solana Alpenglow upgrade does not launch on September 28
The anticipated mainnet launch of Alpenglow, a major consensus upgrade for Solana, did not occur on September 28, 2026, as some reports suggested. Anza, the developer house behind the Agave validator client, clarified that the date in the version 4.3 schedule referred to the resumption of feature gate activations rather than the Alpenglow launch itself.
Alpenglow aims to significantly improve network performance by replacing the existing TowerBFT architecture with the Votor consensus mechanism. This upgrade is designed to reduce transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds. The rollout is being conducted in phases, and the upgrade recently reached its second public test network on September 26.
