Solana developers propose protocol overhaul to mitigate network risks

Brennan Watt, CEO of the blockchain engineering firm Anza, has proposed a major overhaul to the Solana protocol to address potential reliability risks. The proposal aims to establish a single, authoritative specification that defines how the blockchain processes transactions, validates blocks, and reaches consensus.

Currently, Solana relies on various Solana Improvement Documents (SIMDs) and existing validator code to define its rules. This decentralized approach can make it difficult for independent developers to determine exact network behavior. As the ecosystem expands to include diverse validator software, such as Agave and Jump Crypto’s Firedancer, the lack of a consolidated reference increases the risk that different implementations might interpret rules inconsistently.

Such discrepancies could lead to validators processing identical transactions differently, potentially causing conflicting views of the blockchain and threatening network stability. The proposed specification would cover 18 technical areas, including consensus and rewards, to ensure all validator software adheres to the same underlying rules.
