Solana prepares Alpenglow upgrade to reduce transaction finality

Solana is preparing for a major consensus architecture overhaul known as the Alpenglow upgrade. The primary goal of this update is to reduce transaction finality—the point at which a transaction is considered irreversible—from approximately 12.8 seconds under the current TowerBFT mechanism to roughly 150 milliseconds.

Recent developments in the Agave validator client, specifically version 4.2, have already introduced improvements such as reducing slot times from 400ms to 200ms and increasing transaction size limits to 4,096 bytes. While Agave 4.2 contains the code necessary for testing the Alpenglow consensus, the full activation on the mainnet is expected to occur with the Agave 4.3 release, which is currently targeted for October 2026.

Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has noted that rapid finality is particularly critical for real-world applications like point-of-sale payments, where merchants require immediate certainty that a transaction cannot be reversed. To prepare for the transition, Anza has launched a security competition offering up to 50,000 SOL.
