Solana deploys Alpenglow upgrade to devnet to target 150ms finality

Solana is advancing its Alpenglow consensus upgrade, which has successfully transitioned from the testnet to the devnet as of September 25. This major technical overhaul aims to drastically reduce transaction finality times from the current 12.8 seconds to a target range of 100 to 150 milliseconds.

The upgrade introduces a new voting system called Votor, developed by Anza in collaboration with researchers from ETH Zurich. Votor replaces the existing TowerBFT mechanism by allowing validators to exchange votes directly rather than recording them as individual transactions on the blockchain. This change is intended to optimize block capacity and improve network efficiency.

While the upgrade has been deployed in testing environments, a specific date for the mainnet launch has not yet been confirmed. Developers and infrastructure providers are currently being encouraged to test service integration in preparation for the mainnet transition.

Parallel to these technical developments, Solana has seen significant market activity. The token price has recently held above the $120 level, and the network's stablecoin supply has reached a record high of approximately $17.3 billion. Additionally, the platform Pump.fun has recorded substantial cumulative SOL liquidations, totaling over $848 million.
