Solana activates Alpenglow consensus upgrade on mainnet

Solana has activated its Alpenglow consensus protocol upgrade on the mainnet, marking the first major overhaul of its consensus mechanism since its launch. The upgrade replaces the existing TowerBFT system with a new voting protocol called ‘Votor’.

Under the new system, validators exchange votes directly and use aggregated certificates to confirm block validity, rather than recording individual vote transactions on the blockchain. This change is designed to significantly reduce transaction finality time from approximately 12.8 seconds to a target of 150 milliseconds.

Because validator votes will no longer appear as individual transactions on-chain, the Solana Foundation has advised data services and analytics providers to reset their transaction count and transactions per second (TPS) baselines, as headline metrics will decrease even if actual user activity remains constant.

To participate in the new epoch, validators must upgrade to the Agave 4.3.2 client and maintain a minimum balance of 0.8 SOL in their vote accounts to cover the Validator Admission Ticket (VAT) fee. While the upgrade aims for rapid finality, early reports indicated that initial mainnet performance showed finality times of approximately 6.6 seconds, falling short of the 150-millisecond goal.
