Solana reduces block production slot time to 350ms

Solana has reduced its mainnet slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, marking the first structural change to block production intervals since the network's inception. This transition, implemented via the Agave v4.2 client, is the first of four planned 50-millisecond incremental reductions aimed at reaching a final target of 200 milliseconds.

To maintain network stability and a consistent compute ceiling of approximately 250 million units per second, the per-slot compute limit has been adjusted downward from 100 million to 87.5 million units. The Solana Foundation noted that the phased rollout includes specific feature gates to monitor validator stability and block skip rates.

The reduction in slot time is intended to improve competitiveness by lowering latency, increasing block frequency, and enhancing censorship resistance by reducing the time a leader can monopolize block construction. While the change affects transaction throughput and market maker spreads, direct impact on the price of SOL is expected to be limited.
