Solana to launch Alpenglow upgrade to slash transaction finality

Solana is preparing to launch the Alpenglow upgrade on October 21, 2026, during Epoch 1064. This major consensus transition will replace the existing TowerBFT mechanism with the Votor protocol. The upgrade aims to drastically reduce transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to a target of 150 milliseconds, representing a significant increase in settlement speed.

As part of the technical overhaul, validator voting traffic will be moved off-chain. While this improves efficiency and expands Byzantine fault tolerance from 33% to 40%, it may cause a notable decline in reported transactions per second (TPS). Because validator votes currently account for a large portion of on-chain activity, removing them from execution blocks could make headline network throughput figures appear lower, even if actual user demand remains stable.

Financially, Solana has seen growth in its real-world asset (RWA) market, which reached a $4.3 billion market capitalization over the last year. The network also holds approximately $15.5 billion in stablecoins, though this remains significantly lower than Ethereum’s $143.9 billion. Despite these developments and the upcoming upgrade, the SOL token has faced recent price volatility amid broader cryptocurrency market trends.
