Solar activity expected to trigger geomagnetic storm on September 8

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has issued warnings regarding upcoming geomagnetic activity caused by increased solar activity and a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Models suggest that three CMEs could merge and reach Earth around September 8, potentially resulting in a G1-category magnetic storm with a planetary Kp index reaching 5.

Forecasts indicate a 35% probability of a weak geomagnetic storm, a 15% chance of a moderate storm, and a 5% chance of a strong to extreme storm on September 8. While the most active period is expected on that day, conditions are predicted to calm significantly by September 9, with Kp values dropping to approximately 3 and remaining around 2 through September 13.

Such solar activity can trigger auroras, which may be visible in northern regions of Europe, Asia, Canada, and Alaska. If the storm reaches G2 or G3 intensity, sightings may extend further south. Beyond visual phenomena, these geomagnetic disturbances can impact technological infrastructure, including satellite systems, radio communications, GPS precision, and power grids.
