Solar activity poses risks to aviation and global technology
Solar activity and geomagnetic storms pose potential risks to global technological infrastructure and aviation operations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has advised pilots and airlines to plan operations with anticipation when space weather disturbances are possible, as these phenomena can interfere with high-frequency radio transmissions and navigation aids.
Extreme solar events, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), can interact with Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere. While these events can produce auroras, large-scale storms—comparable to the 1859 Carrington Event—could cause significant disruptions to modern electrical grids, satellite communications, and digital systems.
