Solar activity triggers geomagnetic storms and poses grid risks
Recent solar activity has triggered geomagnetic disturbances on Earth. The Space Weather Prediction Center identified G1 and brief G2 conditions caused by successive coronal mass ejections striking the terrestrial shield. These disturbances occur when dense plasma clouds from the Sun interact with Earth's magnetic field, transferring kinetic energy and causing magnetic fluctuations in the upper atmosphere.
In a separate study published in AGU Advances, researchers warned of the potential economic and infrastructure risks posed by extreme solar events. A 1-in-250-year geomagnetic storm is estimated could leave up to 5 million people in the United States without electricity and impact over 135,000 businesses. Such an event could result in daily economic losses of approximately $1.81 billion. The research highlights how solar plasma can create geoelectric fields that interfere with electrical transmission through extra-high-voltage transformers.
