Solar and battery investments show potential for high long-term returns
Modelling by installer Fit Solar suggests that home solar and battery systems may provide stronger long-term financial returns than high-interest savings accounts. For a household using 3,500kWh annually, an £8,500 system is estimated to pay for itself in approximately eight years, potentially overtaking a savings account in value by year 13. Over a 25-year period, the solar investment is projected to be worth roughly £46,700, compared to £25,500 in a savings account with 4.5% interest.
On a broader scale, renewable energy is driving a ‘leapfrog’ effect in emerging markets. Energy strategist Kingsmill Bond of Ember notes that while electrification in the United States and Europe has been stagnant, regions across Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are rapidly investing in solar, wind, and water power rather than following the fossil fuel-based development paths taken by Western nations.
In the United Kingdom, local solar initiatives are also progressing. The Royal & Derngate theatre in Northampton is seeking planning permission to install 232 rooftop solar panels to meet much of its energy needs, a project being considered by West Northamptonshire Council.
