Solar array in Mainz-Mombach remains disconnected from power grid

A sustainability project in Mainz-Mombach has become a source of controversy after a large solar array installed on a new grandstand roof remains disconnected from the power grid. The €550,000 project, intended to serve as a model for sports clubs in Rhineland-Palatinate, was designed to power a planned multi-purpose building featuring VIP and press facilities.

However, the building was never constructed, and following the relegation of the TSV Schott Mainz club to the Oberliga, the project's realization is unlikely. The solar installation is capable of producing approximately 55,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—enough for roughly 15 average households—but the energy currently goes unused.

The City of Mainz stated that connecting the system to the grid would cost approximately €82,000, an expenditure they currently deem "not economically sensible," despite the potential to generate up to €5,000 in annual revenue through electricity sales.
