Solar battery sizing depends on household consumption

Determining the appropriate size for a home solar battery involves evaluating household electricity consumption, usage patterns, and the presence of smart time-of-use tariffs. Rather than simply matching battery capacity to the size of a solar array, experts suggest sizing storage based on actual home use.

Home battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), representing the total energy stored, while power output is measured in kilowatts (kW). While a typical home battery system may have around 10kWh of capacity, individual needs vary based on factors such as the installation of heat pumps or electric vehicles. Data from Ofgem indicates that annual electricity use for standard households can range from 1,600kWh for low consumption to 3,800kWh for high consumption.
