Partial lunar eclipse scheduled for late August 2026
A partial lunar eclipse is scheduled to occur between August 27 and 28, 2026, visible across various regions including the Americas, Europe, and parts of Africa. The phenomenon, often referred to as a ‘Blood Moon’ due to the reddish hue caused by Earth's atmosphere filtering sunlight, will cover approximately 93% to 94% of the lunar disk.
In Spain, the eclipse will be visible throughout the country, with optimal viewing in the western regions and the Canary Islands, where the Moon will remain above the horizon longer. In Mexico, the event will be observable, providing a contrast to previous solar eclipses. In the Americas, the eclipse will be visible from Chile and throughout much of the continent, including the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
Localities are preparing for public viewing. Maracaibo, Venezuela, has organized an astronomical observation night at Parque Monumental Ana María Campos. In Chile, the northern skies are noted as ideal locations for observation. The event is expected to be visible to the naked eye, though telescopes may enhance the experience.
