Solar eclipse triggers surge in celestial music streaming

A recent solar eclipse in the United Kingdom triggered a significant surge in the popularity of celestial-themed music. Data from Spotify shows that Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ saw a 94% increase in listenership in the UK and a 14% increase globally on August 12.

Other tracks experienced massive spikes, including Evolfo’s ‘Moon Eclipsed The Sun’, which rose by 12,817% in the UK. Chris Staples’ ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Eclipse’ also saw substantial growth. Spotify senior editor Shannon Carragher noted that cultural phenomena like eclipses lead people to instinctively seek a soundtrack for shared experiences.

In the wake of the eclipse, a nostalgic television advertisement featuring the late Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has resurfaced. The ad, created in partnership with McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes, used the singer to explain different types of eclipses. The resurgence comes as fans continue to pay tribute to Tyler following her death last month.
