Solar eclipse visible across Algeria on August 12

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a significant partial solar eclipse will be visible across nearly all of Algeria. The event will feature high levels of solar obscuration, exceeding 90% in most provinces and reaching up to 98.6% in certain regions. In Algiers, the eclipse is expected to begin at 18:42:37 local time and reach its peak at 19:35:51, just before sunset when the sun is approximately one degree above the western horizon.

While the eclipse will be partial in Algeria, it will appear as a total solar eclipse along a path crossing Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and the Balearic Islands. The regions of Djanet and In Guezzam are the only parts of Algeria where the phenomenon will not be visible.

The Centre de Recherche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Géophysique (CRAAG) has issued safety warnings, advising against looking directly at the sun without specialized protection. Experts recommend using ISO 12312-2 compliant solar glasses or appropriate filters for telescopes and binoculars, noting that standard sunglasses are insufficient to prevent serious retinal damage. The astronomical activity continues into the following night with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
