Romania energy sector: Hidroelectrica price hikes and new storage funding
Romania is facing significant shifts in its energy landscape. Hidroelectrica, the country's largest energy producer, will increase its active energy price to 0.515 lei per kWh starting in October. This represents an approximately 13% increase for new customers and those with expiring contracts, driven by hydrological crises and the need to purchase electricity from the market to cover production gaps.
To bolster grid stability and support renewable integration, the Ministry of Energy has launched a 150 million euro funding call for stand-alone battery energy storage installations. This initiative, funded through the Modernization Fund, is open to companies of all sizes. Transelectrica estimates that an additional 1,000 MW of solar and wind capacity, along with 1,000 MW of storage, will be connected by the end of the year.
Other notable developments include the Micăsasa commune in Sibiu becoming Romania's first registered energy community with ANRE. Additionally, Scatec is developing the Buciumi BESS project, a lithium-iron-phosphate battery storage facility. These efforts come as environmental pressures, such as low Danube water levels, have previously impacted operations at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.
