Solar energy adoption rises in Cuba amid energy crisis

As Cuba faces a severe energy crisis, solar panel adoption is increasing through both private and institutional channels, though it highlights growing economic disparities.

In the private sector, individuals and businesses with access to foreign currency are installing photovoltaic systems to mitigate frequent power outages. Due to the high cost of equipment—with full systems ranging from approximately $4,500 to over $14,000—some owners in Havana have begun hiring night watchmen to protect their installations from theft.

Concurrently, the state telecommunications company Etecsa is implementing renewable energy solutions to stabilize services. In Holguín, the company has installed several photovoltaic systems to power telecommunications cabinets, benefiting thousands of fixed-line and internet users. Etecsa is also working to install solar systems at mobile radio bases to ensure connectivity during electrical disruptions.
