Solar energy boom causes zero or negative electricity prices
The rapid expansion of solar energy is leading to an increasing frequency of zero or even negative electricity prices in wholesale markets. This phenomenon occurs when renewable generation exceeds demand, creating a surplus that drives prices down.
This trend poses a significant risk to the profitability of new photovoltaic plants and future investments. Due to a lack of storage capacity and specific meteorological conditions, the surplus of renewable energy is becoming more common. Reports indicate that in some regions, such as Spain, France, and Greece, negative prices driven by solar generation were particularly frequent during the second quarter of 2026.
As a result of these market dynamics, there is a growing concern regarding the viability of renewable projects. Some economic reports suggest that approximately one in two renewable energy projects in certain markets may fail to materialize due to these financial risks.
