Solar energy efficiency project achieves 98% tracking success

Researchers have completed a project to increase solar energy efficiency by developing a magnetic-controlled Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) system. Supported by the TÜBİTAK 1002 Rapid Support Program, the study was led by Dr. Kenan Ünal from Gazi University, with Prof. Dr. Selim Öncü from Karabük University serving as a researcher and Prof. Dr. Güngör Bal from Başkent University as an advisor.

The system utilizes an E-class resonant power converter structure to minimize energy losses in the power converter circuit. To achieve precise power adjustment, a second winding was added to the magnetic core of the circuit's coil, allowing electrical properties to be modified via current flow. This enables the system to track the maximum power point produced by solar panels despite changing environmental conditions like radiation and temperature.

Laboratory tests and computer simulations demonstrated that the prototype tracks the maximum possible power from solar panels with an average efficiency of 98%. The researchers noted that the design minimizes energy loss converted into heat and suggested the technology could be applied beyond solar energy to fields such as electric vehicles and battery charging systems.
