Solar energy expansion transforms Central American power grids

Solar photovoltaic energy expansion is transforming the electrical landscape in Central America, with significant growth observed in markets such as Panama and Guatemala. While there is no single regional resolution from the Regional Electricity Interconnection Commission (CRIE) authorizing multiple parks simultaneously, there has been a documented succession of national authorizations and commercial operations.

Panama has emerged as a leading market for photovoltaic activity. According to records from the National Public Services Authority (ASEP), several projects entered commercial operation in 2025. These include Chupampa (7.5 MW), Capira Solar (9.9 MW), La Villa Solar (12 MW), San Carlos Solar (9.99 MW), and four projects identified as UP1, UP2, UP3, and UP4, each providing 8.58 MW.
