Solar energy: Fire risks identified and new battery projects in Mérida

Research from Fundación Inade indicates that 75% of fires in photovoltaic installations are caused by product or installation failures. Specifically, 39% of incidents stem from installation errors and 36% from product defects. Experts, including Andrés Pedreira, emphasize the need for fire prevention and protection engineering to be integrated into the initial design phase of solar and battery storage systems.

In Mérida, Spain, six solar plants are moving to become hybrid facilities by incorporating electrochemical battery storage. These projects, which have undergone public information processes via the Junta de Extremadura, represent a combined investment of 26.7 million euros. The expansion aims to add 51.12 MW of power and 200.6 MWh of storage capacity, allowing the plants to store excess solar energy for later use rather than discharging it immediately upon generation.
