Romania energy sector shifts as battery storage and exports rise
Romania is undergoing a significant shift in its energy landscape, characterized by increased domestic generation, rising electricity exports, and the rapid expansion of battery energy storage systems (BESS). In the first half of 2026, the country's physical electricity import deficit narrowed to 0.79 TWh, down from 2.47 TWh in the previous year, while physical exports rose 52% year-on-year to 4.98 TWh.
Battery storage is becoming a critical tool for managing market volatility. As of early August 2026, Romania had nearly 1,000 MW of installed battery power. This capacity allows operators to exploit price differentials, such as buying energy at low daytime rates and selling during evening peaks when prices can be three times higher.
Industrial and local actors are also adapting. Rompetrol has implemented energy optimization programs at its Petromidia and Vega plants to reduce load during peak hours, aiming to stabilize the national grid. Meanwhile, the municipality of Reghin has approved a 16.75 million lei project to develop a renewable energy community, utilizing European funds to install solar panels and storage for public buildings and local households.
