Solar energy programs launch in UK and Australia to reduce household costs

New renewable energy initiatives have launched in the United Kingdom and Australia to help residents reduce energy costs through solar technology and battery storage.

In the North East of England, Mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority have introduced a group-buying scheme in partnership with Switch Together. The program leverages collective buying power to provide homeowners with competitive offers from vetted installers. The initiative aims to simplify the transition to renewable energy and assist with rising energy bills. Registration for the scheme is free and remains open until September 27.

In Australia, the City of Newcastle Council has reopened its Solar Neighbourhoods program, serving Newcastle, Maitland, and Lake Macquarie. Following a successful first round that generated nearly $5 million in community investment, the second round aims to address cost and complexity for households. The program reported that previous participants achieved annual energy savings of nearly $3,800 per household. The initiative also includes a recycling service for old solar systems at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre.
