Solar halo observed across Brazil's Central-West region
A solar halo, a colorful optical phenomenon resembling a rainbow, was observed on Tuesday (25) across Brazil's Central-West region, including Brasília and cities in Goiás such as Goiânia, Aparecida de Goiânia, and Rio Verde.
Meteorologist Andrea Ramos explains that the phenomenon is caused by sunlight passing through cirrostratus clouds, which are high-altitude clouds located between five and 10 kilometers high. These clouds contain microscopic hexagonal ice crystals that act like small prisms, refracting light and splitting it into the visible spectrum.
Experts clarify that despite popular belief, the solar halo is not a sign of impending rain or a cold front. While the phenomenon is natural and poses no risk regarding solar radiation or temperature, specialists warn that looking directly at the sun without protection can cause retinal damage.
