Solar manufacturers expand capacity through TOPCon upgrades and new US facilities
Indian solar manufacturer Websol Energy System is upgrading its existing monocrystalline PERC cell line to TOPCon technology. The project, expected to be completed by March 2027, involves converting a 600 MW line into a 750 MW TOPCon line, which will increase the company’s total cell manufacturing capacity from 1.2 GW to approximately 1.35 GW.
Websol aims to achieve a cell efficiency of around 25% with the upgrade. To mitigate price volatility associated with TOPCon technology, the company reported a 20% reduction in silver consumption during the 2025-26 financial year and is targeting a further 10% reduction. Long-term plans include evaluating alternative metallization pathways and developing a 4 GW integrated cell and module manufacturing facility in West Bengal.
In the United States, Translucent Energy has commenced operations at a new 1.3 GW solar factory in Summerville, South Carolina. The first phase of the facility is expected to create 167 jobs by the end of the year.
