Solar power drives renewable energy growth in EU and India
Renewable energy production is seeing significant growth in both the European Union and India. In the EU, solar power became the leading contributor to renewable electricity in the second quarter of 2026, accounting for 41.6% of the total renewable share. Overall, renewables provided 54.1% of the EU's electricity during this period. While Germany, France, Spain, and Italy were the largest producers by volume, significant disparities exist between member states; Latvia recorded the highest renewable participation at 97.7%, whereas Slovakia recorded 19.8%.
In India, renewable energy reached nearly one-fifth of the country's total electricity production in July 2026. According to Grid-India, renewable generation rose to approximately 36,355 megawatts, a notable increase from 27,835 megawatts in July 2025. This growth is primarily driven by solar energy as the nation seeks to meet rising industrial and digital infrastructure demands while working toward carbon neutrality by 2070. Despite this expansion, coal remains a necessary component of India's energy mix to ensure grid stability.
