Solar power stabilizes European grids amid French nuclear shutdowns

Heatwaves and droughts have significantly impacted the French energy sector, leading to the shutdown of 13 nuclear reactors. This reduction represents approximately 20.4 percent of the country's total nuclear capacity, the highest level of shutdowns since 2015. Data from the state utility EDF and grid operator RTE indicate that these environmental constraints could lead to capacity losses of up to 12,474 megawatts between mid-August and early September.

To stabilize the grid during these shortages, solar power generation has played a critical role, accounting for up to 35 percent of the French electricity mix during recent weeks. This trend of high solar output is observed across several European countries.

In the broader European market, the surge in solar energy during midday hours is creating extreme price volatility. On sunny summer days, wholesale electricity prices on the EPEX SPOT exchange frequently drop to zero or enter negative territory. This surplus offers opportunities for industrial sectors, such as IT infrastructure managers, to utilize 'load shifting'—moving heavy computational tasks to peak solar production hours to reduce costs and carbon footprints.
