Solar technology innovations aim to integrate renewable energy with agriculture
New developments in solar technology are offering innovative solutions for integrating renewable energy with agricultural practices. Researchers at Malarden University in Sweden have tested semitransparent, pink-colored solar panels designed to generate electricity while allowing specific wavelengths of light to reach crops below.
In experimental trials involving broccoli, crops grown under panels with 50% and 70% transparency achieved yields similar to those grown in direct sunlight, though they reached maturity 25 days later. While the current prototype is still in development and does not yet capture energy effectively, the concept aims to maximize land use by combining food production and power generation.
Additionally, the installation of photovoltaic panels on curved agricultural silos is being explored as a method to reduce energy costs and utilize underused space. This approach requires specialized technical considerations, such as structural assessments to manage weight and the use of flexible or low-profile panels suitable for curved surfaces.
