Solara4, Portugal's largest solar plant, faces insolvency

Welink Energy Portugal has filed for insolvency regarding Solara4, the largest photovoltaic plant in Portugal. Despite being launched five years ago as a milestone for the energy transition, the 219 MW facility has failed to meet its initial financial expectations.

A report by consultancy BDO indicates that electricity generation fell below original forecasts, leading to cash flow issues caused by a mix of operational and market challenges. The company had previously planned significant expansions, including adding 50 MW of solar capacity, a 264 MW wind project, and a 100 MW battery storage system to reach a total capacity of 600 MW. However, these plans faced setbacks when the Portuguese Environment Agency issued an unfavorable environmental assessment.

In addition to generation shortfalls, the company faces a potential dispute with the construction firm China Triumph International Engineering.
