Mining and tunnel accidents cause multiple fatalities in Colombia and India

Six miners were found dead following an explosion at the El Porvenir 1 coal mine in Cucunubá, Cundinamarca, Colombia. The explosion, potentially caused by methane gas accumulation, trapped the workers underground. While one worker managed to escape on his own, rescue teams confirmed the deaths of Duvan Ferney Rodríguez, Cristian de Jesús Contreras Latorre, Sebastián Contreras Latorre, Eduard Alexander Díaz, Yerson Mauricio Rojas, and Jhon Mario Triviño Serna.

Investigations are underway by the National Mining Agency (ANM) to determine why extraction activities were occurring despite a standing suspension order issued during a recent safety inspection.

In a separate incident in Uttarakhand, India, at least seven workers died and 13 others were injured after a landslide triggered a sudden influx of water and debris into a tunnel under construction for a hydroelectric project. The accident occurred during heavy monsoon rains, which have increased the risk of landslides and flooding in the Himalayan region.
