Soledad Núñez elected mayor of Asunción
Soledad Núñez, representing the Alianza Juntos por Asunción, has been elected as the new mayor of Asunción, Paraguay. Núñez secured 133,325 votes (47.78%), defeating the officialist candidate Camilo Pérez of the Asociación Nacional Republicana, who received 128,301 votes (45.98%).
Núñez, a civil engineer with a master's in Public Policy from the University of Oxford, becomes the first opposition leader to head the capital's municipality. She is the second woman to hold the position, following Evanhy de Gallegos.
Following the election held on October 4, the Tribunal Superior de Justicia Electoral (TSJE) has scheduled the final computations and proclamation for October 23. Núñez is expected to take office on November 3. While Núñez prepares to form a transition team from the current administration of Luis Bello, Camilo Pérez has indicated his team will monitor the judicial review of the electoral records.
