Solhatt awarded PLANTEARVEN-prisen 2026 for preserving Norwegian vegetable varieties
Solhatt økologisk hagebruk has been awarded the PLANTEARVEN-prisen 2026 for its work in revitalizing traditional Norwegian vegetable varieties. The award, presented by the Norwegian Gene Resource Center at NIBIO, recognizes the company's efforts to make heritage crops accessible to growers across the country.
By testing, propagating, and selling seeds for approximately 27 older varieties—including peas, tomatoes, cabbage, and onions—Solhatt ensures that plant genetic resources are actively used rather than just stored in gene banks. These varieties are specifically adapted to Norwegian growing conditions and may contain genetic material essential for future crop development.
The 2026 theme for the award was preparedness, focusing on how plant genetic diversity contributes to food and supply security in Norway. Jury leader Ragnar Våga Pedersen noted that preparedness involves preserving seeds and strengthening knowledge regarding the link between biodiversity and security.
