Solicitors Regulation Authority faces no confidence threat

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) faces potential calls for a vote of no confidence in its leadership regarding proposed regulatory changes. The dispute centers on plans to separate the roles of Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration (COFA) from individuals holding “unilateral decision making” responsibilities within law firms.

Jade Gani, CEO of Circe Law and a founder of the SME & Boutique Law Firm Alliance, has expressed concerns that these proposals would disproportionately affect over 1,500 small and boutique law firms. Under the current proposal, firms with an annual turnover exceeding £600,000 or those holding more than £2 million in client accounts would be required to implement this separation.

Gani argues that these thresholds are arbitrary and could impact various sectors, including personal injury firms and Court of Protection firms. While the Alliance maintains it supports increased scrutiny and the protection of client funds, it criticizes the SRA’s chosen regulatory route and the lack of evidence supporting the proposed thresholds.
