Solingen terror attack anniversary: Leaders call for remembrance
Two years after the Islamist-motivated terror attack in Solingen, political leaders are calling for remembrance and renewed commitment to public safety. The attack, which targeted the ‘Festival of Diversity’ during the city's 650th anniversary, resulted in three deaths and eight injuries.
North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, stating that the state must do everything possible to protect its citizens. He emphasized that while absolute security cannot be promised, the government has a permanent responsibility to recognize dangers early and implement protective measures. Wüst noted that many security measures initiated immediately after the attack have been successfully implemented.
The CDU parliamentary group in Solingen has also called for a collective commemoration. Carsten Voigt, the CDU parliamentary group leader, highlighted the lasting psychological impact on survivors and urged the community to come together through church services and dialogue events to honor those lost and find comfort in social cohesion.
