Solingen trolleybus system faces potential discontinuation

The future of trolleybus systems in Germany faces uncertainty as Solingen prepares for a critical decision this November regarding its network. Solingen has historically been a major hub for these electric vehicles, which draw power from overhead lines.

If the system is discontinued in Solingen, trolleybuses may only continue to operate in Esslingen and Eberswalde. While Solingen's system is at a crossroads, Esslingen is actively expanding its network with the goal of operating a 100 percent electric municipal transit system. Eberswalde also maintains a long-standing history with the technology, having utilized trolleybuses to replace tram lines in 1940.

The technology, which traces its origins back to early experiments by Werner von Siemens in 1882, remains a distinct part of the urban landscape in these specific German cities.
