SOLIS100 isolation study concludes after 100 days

Six volunteers from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal completed a 100‑day isolation experiment (SOLIS100) at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft‑ und Raumfahrt (DLR) facility in Cologne. The study, commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA), examined how long‑duration space missions to the Moon or Mars affect health, cognition and performance under extreme conditions such as lack of sunlight, limited food supplies and no personal contact.

During the 14‑week confinement the crew followed a strict schedule of scientific work, medical data collection, intensive exercise and station maintenance, communicating with ground control mainly via intercom. After a one‑week post‑isolation monitoring period, the participants returned to everyday life. The 126‑day dataset will now be analyzed to standardise support measures for future astronaut crews.
