Solomon Islands BLC questions Citizenship Amendment Bill 2026
The Bills and Legislation Committee (BLC) in the Solomon Islands has raised concerns regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2026. During a hearing attended by Ministry of Home Affairs representatives, committee members questioned the lack of a documented government policy framework to support the proposed changes to the Citizenship Act 2018.
Opposition Leader Manasseh Sogavare MP challenged the government to provide the policy foundation for the Bill, noting the absence of public documents outlining objectives, evidence, or expected outcomes. Sogavare emphasized the need for meaningful public consultation, arguing that individuals whose legal status or citizenship rights may be affected must have the opportunity to contribute to the legislative process.
