MV Awka passengers and crew rescued after drifting at sea
All 73 passengers and crew aboard the MV Awka have been safely rescued following a multi-day maritime emergency in the Solomon Islands. The vessel experienced a main engine failure on Friday, October 9, while traveling between Tikopia and Vanikoro in Temotu Province, leaving it drifting in open waters.
A coordinated search and rescue operation involved the Solomon Islands Government, regional partners, and international allies. To support those stranded, French and Australian aircraft dropped essential supplies, including food, water, and medical kits, into the ocean.
The final extraction was completed after the RSIPF Patrol Boat Gizo reached the vessel on Sunday night and commenced towing operations. The passengers and crew were successfully transferred to the MV Helper 1 and subsequently brought ashore at Vanikoro. Temotu Premier Stanley Tehiahua confirmed the success of the operation, noting that the priority throughout was the safety of everyone on board.
