Solomon Islands launches breast cancer awareness campaign
The Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services has launched a breast cancer awareness campaign running from 14 October to 7 November 2026. Health officials expressed concern over low screening rates, noting that the National Referral Hospital in Honiara performed only 190 mammograms between January and June 2026, averaging approximately 32 per month.
Dr Gregory Jilini, Acting Permanent Secretary for Health, reported that breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in the country, with an estimated 128 diagnoses and 47 deaths annually. He noted that the number of new patients requiring chemotherapy at the National Referral Hospital rose from 39 in 2019 to 99 in 2022. Barriers to early treatment include fear, stigma, lack of awareness, and financial pressures, which often lead women to seek medical attention only at advanced stages.
In support of the campaign, Honourable Choilyn Douglas hosted the country’s first-ever Cancer Survivors Breakfast. During the event, she called on communities to strengthen awareness and ensure survivors receive compassionate care and solidarity. The initiative aims to encourage early detection and prompt medical advice for those noticing unusual physical changes.
