Solomon Islands marks 84 years of Guadalcanal Campaign commemorations

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale led national commemorations at the Bloody Ridge National Historical Park on Guadalcanal to mark 84 years since the decisive battles of the Guadalcanal Campaign during the Second World War.

The ceremony brought together representatives from the Solomon Islands, the United States, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, including U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. Prime Minister Wale paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and the traditional landowners of the Solomon Islands, who provided food, labor, and shelter during the conflict.

Wale emphasized that the site should serve as a place of remembrance, education, and reconciliation. He noted that while the campaign was a major turning point in the Pacific War, the most significant lesson is how former enemies have transitioned from conflict to peace and friendship.
