Solomon Islands opposition alleges Australian interference

The Solomon Islands opposition and former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare have raised allegations of foreign interference following the leak of communications involving Australian officials. The messages suggest that prospective Australian financial assistance and bilateral treaty negotiations may have been used to influence domestic political processes.

Leaked text messages, including one from Australian High Commissioner Jeffrey Roach to Deputy Prime Minister Francis Sade, detail a proposed treaty package. The communications outline substantial financial commitments, including approximately SBD1.64 billion in assistance between 2026 and 2028. This includes SBD5 million for each constituency by late 2026, followed by annual allocations, as well as SBD820 million for free education and SBD275 million for visa and security improvements.

The controversy emerged around a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Matthew Wale. The opposition expressed deep concern that the timing of the promised aid—linked to calls for political unity to “defeat this Motion”—raises questions regarding the boundary between legitimate development cooperation and interference in sovereign political affairs. A subsequent treaty package from 2029 could include an additional SBD4.1 billion in support.
