Solomon Islands Opposition forms Shadow Ministerial Team

The Parliamentary Opposition Group in the Solomon Islands has established a Shadow Ministerial Team designed to increase scrutiny of government ministries, policies, decisions, and public expenditure. Under this new structure, Opposition Members of Parliament will be assigned specific portfolio responsibilities to hold government ministers accountable for their respective departments.

Each Shadow Minister is tasked with monitoring ministerial work, examining legislation and spending, engaging with stakeholders, and developing alternative policy options. Because the Opposition consists of 16 Members of Parliament compared to the Government’s 24 ministerial portfolios, some Opposition MPs will manage dual or multiple shadow responsibilities by grouping related ministries.

Leader of the Official Opposition, Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, stated that the move aims to make the Opposition’s work more organized and accessible to the public. He emphasized that the goal is to provide responsible scrutiny and a credible alternative vision for the nation rather than opposition for its own sake.
