Solomon Islands PM Wale pledges provincial empowerment for Makira-Ulawa

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed the GREAT Coalition Government’s commitment to strengthening provincial governments and supporting the Makira-Ulawa Province. During a meeting with Makira-Ulawa Premier Stanley Siapu and his executive, Wale outlined a reform agenda aimed at providing provinces with greater responsibility, resources, functions, and human capacity to deliver services more effectively.

The Prime Minister stated that the government is reviewing the legislative framework governing provincial governments and considering new revenue-sharing arrangements. He emphasized the need to focus on what can realistically be transferred to provinces to ensure they have the capacity to perform essential functions.

Premier Siapu expressed support for the national government's direction, noting that the goals of the PACRA Government align with the national focus on reform, employment, accountability, and transformation. The provincial leadership indicated a readiness to collaborate with the national government to achieve development outcomes for the people of Makira-Ulawa.
