Solomon Islands pursues diverse foreign policy and domestic wealth reforms

The Solomon Islands government is pursuing a diversified foreign policy aimed at balancing relations between Western nations and China. Foreign Minister Rick Houenipwela stated that the administration seeks to restore engagement with traditional partners like Australia and the United States, which he noted had felt ‘neglected’ in recent years. Prime Minister Matthew Wale has conducted diplomatic visits to Australia, the United States, and Japan to expand external partnerships while reaffirming the ‘One China’ policy to maintain stable relations with Beijing.

Domestically, political discussions are centering on a proposed Sovereign Wealth Fund. Member of Parliament Rollen Seleso has called for the fund's framework to include legally enforceable benefits for customary landowners and provinces. Seleso emphasized that the nation's mineral wealth must serve the broader population and urged the government to provide clarity on how equitable benefit-sharing will be protected from political pressure and ensured through legislation.
