Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has announced the commencement of a review into the nation's 2022 security agreement with China. Wale emphasized a commitment to transparency and accountability, stating there will be "no more secrecy" regarding international agreements that bind the nation.
Wale revealed that he was only permitted to read the 2022 agreement one day before an official meeting in Canberra in May 2026, following his election as Prime Minister. He called on the Leader of the Opposition, Manasseh Sogavare, to support the review process, asserting that no treaty should stand without the informed consent of Parliament.
While advocating for greater parliamentary oversight, Wale maintained that China remains an important partner and described the Solomon Islands as being "friends to all and enemies to none."
