Solomon Pappaiah, renowned Tamil scholar, passes away at 90

Renowned Tamil scholar, professor, and debate moderator Solomon Pappaiah passed away in Madurai at the age of 90 due to age-related ailments. The Tamil Nadu government announced that his final rites would be conducted with state honours in recognition of his significant contributions to Tamil language, literature, and public discourse.

Pappaiah was a prominent figure who bridged the gap between classical scholarship and the general public. He was widely known for popularizing the 'pattimandram'—a traditional Tamil debate format—bringing discussions on classical literature and social issues into households through television. Over a career spanning several decades, he moderated more than 12,000 such programs globally.

In addition to his work as a moderator and media personality, Pappaiah had a long academic career, serving as a Tamil professor at The American College in Madurai for over three decades. He was also a recipient of the Padma Shri, India’s civilian honour, in 2021, and the Kalaimamani award in 2000. His funeral was scheduled to take place at the Thathaneri electric crematorium in Madurai.
