Solomon Pappaiya, veteran Tamil scholar and actor, dies at 90
Tamil scholar, debate moderator, and actor Solomon Pappaiya passed away in Madurai on Friday at the age of 90. He had been suffering from age-related ailments.
Pappaiya was a prominent figure in Tamil culture, widely recognized for popularizing the traditional debate format known as pattimandram. He used wit and accessible language to bring discussions on classical literature and social issues to a wide audience.
In addition to his public debate career, he served as a Tamil professor at The American College in Madurai for over 30 years. He also appeared in several Tamil films, including Mudhalvan, Boys, and Sivaji: The Boss. His contributions were recognized with the Kalaimamani award in 2000 and the Padma Shri, India’s civilian honor, in 2021.
