Solvang city employee strike enters fourth day
A strike by approximately 30 city employees in Solvang, California, has entered its fourth day, impacting municipal operations and the preparations for the annual Danish Days festival. The workers, represented by Teamsters Local 986, constitute roughly 75% of the city staff.
The labor dispute follows a breakdown in contract negotiations that began in April. The impasse occurred after the Solvang City Council voted to impose a ‘last, best, and final offer,’ which included a 4% annual raise for three years. The union had requested a 4% increase for the first year followed by 6% increases for the subsequent two years.
City Manager Randy Murphy stated that the city's offer is fiscally sustainable and includes a benefits package valued at approximately $38,000 per employee. Conversely, union members have expressed a need to be valued and listened to regarding their rights and wages.
The strike has affected local governance, as the Solvang Design Review Committee failed to reach a quorum after members declined to cross picket lines, resulting in the postponement of several sign approvals. Despite the labor action, the Danish Days Foundation reported that preparations for the three-day event continued through the use of available crews.
